Amplified Teams

2027, Earth

In 2027, interest in amplified teams increased sharply, with many companies offering matchmaking and integration. I’ll let one of the brochures of the day tell the story:

So You Want To Join An Amplified Team? by Amplified Green

Congratulations! Amplified teams are among the most valuable and productive members of our society. They perform challenging and intellectually stimulating work that others cannot, and they are highly compensated for their efforts.

Chances are that you've heard about amplified teams before. Maybe you've watched a video or read a book or played a game that featured a team. It's important to remember that fiction can be very different from reality, so before you make the decision to join one, it's useful to understand what they're really like.

"Being in an amplified team is like knowing the answer to a question before you ask it — or like putting on lenses and scripts and agents after a lifetime without them. Everything feels so much more rich and vibrant. Everything that you see and feel is drenched in data and connections and meaning."

— Deborah Deans, member of Oak and Iron

The Basics

Amplified teams usually have three to seven human members supported by highly customised software that allows them to communicate with one another — and with AI support systems — at an accelerated rate. Unlike other networked teams, most amplified teams work in the same vicinity in order to reduce lag and take advantage of non-verbal cues to increase trust and bandwidth. This helps develop heightened levels of 'team reasoning' and ‘limited collective utility’ maximisation.

However, there are hundreds of variations in how amplified teams can work. Larger teams of up to ten and even 15 members aren't unheard of, although co-ordination instability can be a problem. Some specialised teams are capable of working at great distances and high latency, with one or more remote members being light-seconds away.

The compact, personalised, stable, and tightly networked nature of amplified teams makes them ideal for tackling knotty or time-sensitive challenges that cannot be easily distributed to the usual problem solvers. Take the case of a globally simultaneous product launch or an important real-time political speech: an amplified team will be able to provide unified, co-ordinated, and instant responses to second-by-second changes in the market or audience. Team members will communicate constantly with one another and with their AI support systems to work on the most critical parts of the challenge, resulting in a flawless product launch or a perfectly-pitched speech. But their strengths do not come easily.

What makes a good team member?

Since every amplified team is different, there's no single model for an ideal team member. Research shows that the people who integrate well and perform best with an amplified team have the following skills:

Excellent empathy and communication skills

Ability to speak in multiple languages

Advanced skills in at least one area (such as writing, programming, negotiation, kamilanning)

Interactional expertise

A high degree of adaptability

If you do have these skills, congratulations!

Some signs that you may be a good team member candidate include:

A talent for conflict resolution

Genuinely good listening skills

The ability to let arguments drop

Do I still keep my personality?

Of course! While some amplified teams choose to present a 'united' face to the public, even the most integrated team members are still fully capable of an independent life. It is true that after leaving a team, some detached members may appear to have a substantially changed personality, but the same would be true of anyone undergoing a significant life event. At Amplified Green, we pride ourselves on our detachment expertise, with a 99.6 percent success rate as measured by the International Amplified Team Organisation.

What kind of technology do amplified teams use?

Although magnetoencephalography and dermal tattoos are currently in favour, some teams have had success using extremely low-tech solutions such as necklaces and glasses, or even terminals. Others prefer to use experimental and even invasive techniques. Unless all of a team's members are experienced in a particular linking technology, we usually recommend that they try out the full range before settling on a solution.

What kind of jobs are amplified teams good at?

There's no limit to the challenges that teams may take on. It's not all science and political problems: last year's Best Picture at the Oscars was created largely by the Scarlet Heart team based in Los Angeles! Other notable occupations include:

Games development (Corazon)

Swarm teleoperation (BHA-ETH)

Negotiation (The Stuarts)

Hypothesis development (Chandra)

Pattern analysis and intelligence services (Banburismus)
